Under Pinnings

Chemise-A loose fitting gown worn under the main garment. It can be made of Cotton, Linen or Silk. It fastens at the neck with a drawstring closure. Length can vary from short shirt length to full length gown.(See Photo Gallery)

Corset-The corset is an important part of the costume, as it shapes the garment bodice and creates the "fashion look" desired to fit the period represented. The styles of corsets vary depending on the period of history. What is suitable under a gown from the Rococo period would not give the same look under a gown from the Victorian or Regency periods. It is important to specify the period of the costume your corset will be worn under. Note: Corsets are only available in my area, Northeast Massachusetts.(See Photo Gallery)

Crinoline-Hoop skirt worn under the petticoat to support the outer skirt and create the desired "fashion look" of the period. Variations include the Farthingale from Elizabethan times with hoops inserted thru casings inside the petticoat, to the Cage Crinoline from the Victorian period with whalebone or steel hoops connected by wide twill tape strips. Please specify the period of the costume your crinoline is to be worn under.(See Photo Gallery)

Panier-A collapsible, boned "basket" worn under the petticoat to support the dress at the sides. A necessity for sacque back gowns and other dresses of the Rococo period. It ties in the front and has side slits to accommodate side pockets worn separately.(See Photo Gallery)

Petticoat-Under garment worn between the dress skirt support, ex. panier, cage crinoline, and the outer skirt to protect the dress fabric from the whalebones or metal hoops of skirt support. Decorative and quilted petticoats were worn to show thru the open skirt front during Rococo and other periods. Specify the period of the costume your petticoat will be worn under.(See Photo Gallery)
